Diagnostic Imaging Suite

Blood samples can give an idea of what is going on biochemically, haematologically or endocrinologically within your pet, but sometimes we need to use diagnostic imaging (X-rays and ultrasound) to examine inside bodies.

Radiology (X-ray) has been used since 1885 to look inside bodies. It is often used to diagnose or confirm a fracture so that repair can be planned, or to look for a foreign body that is causing an obstruction within the intestines - from toys to underwear and from needles to expensive diamond rings you would be amazed at what is sometimes discovered! The Park Veterinary Hospital, Emergency Service machine is a sophisticated, high-powered and sensitive machine that can be used from the largest dog to the tiniest kitten.

As well as radiology Park Veterinary Hospital, Emergency Service also has access to an ultrasound machine. This is mainly used to look for fluid within body cavities, monitoring the size of an animal’s bladder, looking at the heart and examining the architecture of individual organs. Depending on the scan required this non-invasive procedure can often be performed conscious with no sedation.

From time to time we also require the use of the endoscopes that are available. These provide visual access to places we otherwise would not be able to view (upper airways, oesophagus and inside the stomach). Park Veterinary Hospital, Emergency Service has a full range of endoscopes available, including rigid and flexible bronchoscopes and gastroscope.

In some circumstances it may be necessary to arrange referral for an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging).
