MRI Service
We are pleased to offer a new specialist service at The Park Veterinary Group which complements our referral services in Ophthalmology, Surgery (Soft tissue and Orthopaedic) and Diagnostic Imaging (Ultrasound, Radiography and Endoscopy). The scanner visits monthly and plugs into a special power point at our Veterinary Hospital in Glenfield. Having this facility available, means worried owners no longer need to travel long distances with an ill pet to benefit from this advanced service. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) enables us to look at detailed images of the body by the using an extremely powerful electromagnet and has the advantage of being extremely safe. These features make it ideal for imaging the brain, spine and the skull. MRI has many advantages over x-rays and ultrasound including the incredible detail it provides. Scans can be taken in amazingly fine slices through the body allowing us to make diagnoses in even the most subtle problems like a collapsing disc in the spine or a torn ligament in the knee. The more powerful the scanner, the better the detail of the pictures and our scanner is one of the most powerful in the country. It requires 415 volts and a 100 amp supply which is a huge amount of power! The scanner costs about £1 million to buy. A scan takes about 45 minutes from start to finish and about 150-200 images are produced per animal. These images are then interpreted by RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) Recognised Specialists in Diagnostic Imaging to give the best analysis. We also accept referrals from local veterinary practices for MRI scanning - please contact us at our Glenfield Hospital on0116 231 1635When is it useful?
