We are currently accepting applications for EMS placements at Park Veterinary Group– here’s some more information about what a placement might look like for you at our practice.

EMS student experience

We welcome all veterinary students!

Opportunities available for EMS students and working hours

We offer placements at our first opinion practices where we focus on encouraging you to develop your clinical skills and knowledge, but mostly your confidence which is extremely important. We also aim to offer some placements within our hospital, where you will shadow our inpatient vet and get the opportunity to follow through more varied cases. We aim to try and make a working week work best for you with an option a 4-day (08:30-19:00) or 5-day (08:30-17:00) week.

What we expect from our EMS students and what they can expect in return

We have four first opinion sites and a hospital based in Glenfield. At our hospital we have a speciality ophthalmology team and are developing our orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery speciality with vets showing high interest in this area. Our Glenfield hospital has Gold Cat Friendly status from the ISFM and our Whetstone and Saffron Lane sites have Silver Cat Friendly status.

The small animal placement will consist of:

  • Shadowing one vet for the entire working day
  • Becoming involved in all clinical aspects (patient dependent) including but not limited to:
    • Surgery (One routine surgical procedure minimum)
    • Consults
    • IV placement
    • Phlebotomy

Unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee clinical activity involvement but endeavour to teach as much as possible.  On occasion patient safety may require less teaching and more shadowing, but we do our best to minimise these times.

It is important when on placement to try and involve yourself in the most effective ways and try to work with the team. We ask for you to provide us with three things that you would like to develop prior to your placement. The more specific with this you are, the more likely we are able to help you achieve confidence with them.

Travel and accommodation

We have ample car parking spaces for those who drive, but all our sites are also accessible via public transport.

Unfortunately, we do not offer any accommodation, but there are hotels nearby that you can arrange transport to and from.

Are there any accessibility considerations that I might need to take into account at your practice?

Please be aware that all our sites are over two floors. Two sites have clinical areas on the first floor, and one site has a well-being room (2nd floor); all sites have a staff room on first floor.
