There are two routes to becoming qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN); either through vocational (college) training or via a higher education (university degree) qualification. Both routes lead to registration as a veterinary nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). More information can be found here.
We are currently accepting applications from degree Student Veterinary Nurses (SVN) at Park Vet Group – here’s some more information about what a placement might look like for you at our practice.
Degree student nurses experience
We take SVNs at all stages.
Opportunities available for student nurses and working hours
SVN degree placement students work a 5-day week in the mutually agreed site and will remain there unless cover is needed elsewhere. College students will rotate through all sites every 6 months.
Students are required to work 1 in 4 or 5 weekends, 9am-4pm on either Saturday or Sunday at the hospital. Also, when based at the hospital there will be one 1pm-10pm shift once a week.
If the agreed site is the hospital, students will have the opportunity to have clinical time in the hospital, including involvement in the referral aspects.
What we expect from our student nurses and what they can expect in return
We have one hospital that focuses on Orthopaedics and Ophthalmology and three branches which are first opinion. Our Glenfield hospital has Gold Cat Friendly status from the ISFM and our Whetstone and Saffron Lane sites have Silver Cat Friendly status.
We expect students to fully immerse themselves in the work and be enthused with each opportunity, however we do expect them to know their own limits and speak up. In exchange we will support them with each new learning barrier.
Travel and accommodation
We have ample car parking spaces, but all our sites are also easily accessible via public transport. We do not have accommodation on site.
Are there any accessibility considerations that I might need to take into account at your practice?
Please be aware that all our sites are over two floors. Two sites have clinical areas on the second floor, and one site has a well-being room (3rd floor), all sites have a staff room on second floor.
