Although not the nicest things to think about, anal gland impactions and the stinky smells they cause are important to understand and look out for in your pooches!

Dogs with anal gland issues not only smell, but they are often very uncomfortable. It’s useful to be able to identify any issues so we can address them quickly.

What is a normal ear like?

The normal ear canal and ear flap are lined with smooth pale pink skin. The ear canal is usually empty and conducts sound down to the ear drum. Some breeds of dog have hairy ear canals.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints, usually in the legs, causing joint stiffness, pain and lameness.

What is food allergy dermatitis?

A food allergy or intolerance is when protein molecules in the food trigger an immune response in the skin or intestines.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic disease of middle and old aged dogs, whose symptoms are caused by high blood sugar, due to lack of the hormone insulin. Obesity is the main predisposing factor.

Neutering a male dog involves complete removal of a dog’s testicles under general anaesthetic. This is also known as castration. It is not a vasectomy. It does not stop him from being bouncy or change his basic personality.

Removing the testicles stops the production of sperm and greatly reduces the production of the male hormone testosterone.

Neutering a female dog is also known as ‘spaying’. The technical name for the procedure is ovariohysterectomy.

The operation involves the removal of the entire womb (uterus) and the ovaries. The operation is done through her tummy, at the midline.
